Four species of microcrustacea were found in the benthal of the river Kleine Kyll at Man­ derscheid: Alona intermedia, Chydorus sphaericus, Eucyclops serrulatus and E. speratus. Both A. intermedia and E. speratus had previously not been recorded from the Eifel region and Rhineland-Palatinate. Discussed are factors which possibly are limiting the distribution of mi­ crocrustaceans, i.e. substrate type, oxygenation of the interstitial, and different anthropogenic impacts. Recolonisation after disturbances might take place both from the interstitial or from upstream lentic habitats such as lakes or fish ponds, which are integrated in the riverine sys­ tem via lower-order streams.
