This work focused on the limnological characterization of Laguna Negra, located in the department of Rocha (Uruguay), a shallow freshwater ecosystem with high and permanent turbidity. The main objective was to analyze the trophic state and describe the predominant biological communities, considering environmental and anthropogenic factors that affect its quality. The research included the analysis of data obtained in summer monitoring campaigns carried out between 2015 and 2023. The samples included physicochemical variables (temperature, pH, turbidity, nutrients, among others), biological variables (phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos), and sediment characteristics. The methods included standard laboratory techniques and principal component analysis. The results indicated that the lagoon presents a mesotrophic to eutrophic state according to different indices. The dominance of diatoms in the phytoplankton and the low abundance of benthic organisms are highlighted. The high turbidity conditions are partly attributed to sediment resuspension, but other characteristics and processes must be studied to fully explain this phenomenon, which limits water transparency and possibly hinders the system's productivity. These characteristics, combined with potential impacts from water management and activities in the basin, demonstrate the ecosystem's vulnerability. The results are compared with the limited limnological data available for the system. The work constitutes a baseline for future research and provides relevant input for the environmental management of Laguna Negra, particularly for the development of a management plan within the framework of its recent inclusion in the National System of Protected Areas.
