The culture of E. gracilis was conducted in glass jars returned into Lake Balaton between Nov. 1974 and May 1976. The duration of the embryonic development ranged from 44 h - 31 days depending on the water temperature. The duration of the development of the nauplii varied from 4-113 days. The development times for nauplii reared on natural food and on food enriched with algae were the same. The mortality rate was 4.6%. The development of the copepodite instars ranged from 12-139 days. The duration of development was related to the seasonal variation of temperature. Development was faster in animals kept in Balaton-water enriched with algae than in individuals kept on natural food. The mortality of the copepodite instars was 18.9%. The duration of the development of males cultured on natural food was 2 days shorter than that of females. The complete development took 18-164 days and strictly followed the changes of the temperature. About 23.5% of hatched juveniles perished before reaching the adult stage. The appearance of 9-11 generations of E. gracilis per year can be expected in Lake Balaton.
