The food composition and its influence on the life history of the calanoid copepods of Lake Ohrid, Macedonia, were srudied under natural conditions. Many factors have stimulated intensive ecological studies of Eudiaptomus gracilis (SARS) in this lake (SERAFIMOVA-H. 1978). Calanoid copepods are represented mostly by E. gracĂlis and contribute significantly to the biomass o f zooplankton. Here, we have analysed the share of phytoplankton in the food of this species. In Lake Ohrid, E. gracilis occurs throughout the year but is particularly abundant during the winter and spring when it is the dominant species among the copepods. The spring algal mass is a source of food for maturation and egg production.
